Prime Minister Narendra Modi took aim at the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance on Friday, accusing them of plotting against Jammu and Kashmir after the state assembly passed a resolution calling for the restoration of Article 370. Speaking in Dhule, Maharashtra, Modi said that the Congress and their allies had started their efforts to reverse the region’s changes as soon as they got the opportunity to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir.
He highlighted that just two days earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly passed the resolution opposing the revocation of Article 370. This resolution was passed through a voice vote, with strong support from the Congress-NC alliance, while BJP members strongly disagreed. BJP MLAs who protested were reportedly thrown out of the assembly.
Modi also condemned the display of banners inside the assembly calling for the restoration of Article 370, calling it an attempt to bring back the region’s special status, which he claimed the country would never accept. He said, “The country will not accept this,” reaffirming that the BJP would continue to oppose any move to restore Article 370.
The Prime Minister made it clear that as long as he remains in power, Congress will not be able to undo the changes made in Jammu and Kashmir. “Only Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution will prevail in Jammu and Kashmir. No power can bring back Article 370,” Modi stressed.
The restoration of Article 370 and the return of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood were major promises in the National Conference’s election manifesto. Modi also accused Congress and its allies of working against the Constitution and trying to strip away protections for marginalized communities, like Dalits and the Valmiki community, by undoing reservations for these groups.
Wrapping up his remarks, Modi claimed that the Congress-led alliance, along with its partners in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), was part of a broader conspiracy against the Constitution and the rights of Dalits, backward classes, and tribals.
