Nov. 14, 2024: Uddhav Thackeray, the chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), made a bold promise to stop the flow of projects from Maharashtra to Gujarat if voted to power. At a poll rally in Kankavli, Thackeray targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah, questioning his definition of development. Thackeray claimed that during his tenure as chief minister, he stalled the flight of projects to Gujarat, and vowed to ban the movement of projects if elected.
Thackeray’s remarks came amidst the upcoming Maharashtra elections, scheduled for November 20, with results to be announced on November 23. The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief also alleged that the BJP diverted a submarine project and numerous industries to Gujarat. He framed the election as a battle between those who love Maharashtra and those who betray it.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) was formed in 2022 after a split in the Shiv Sena party, led by Thackeray. The party’s ideology is centered around Hindutva, social conservatism, and Marathi regionalism. Thackeray has filed a petition against the Election Commission’s decision to recognize Eknath Shinde’s faction as the legitimate Shiv Sena.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) performed well in the 2024 Indian general elections, winning 9 seats. The party’s alliance, Maha Vikas Aghadi, secured 31 seats out of 48 in Maharashtra.
Thackeray’s promise to stop project migration has sparked debate ahead of the elections. With the Shiv Sena (UBT) positioning itself as a champion of Maharashtra’s interests, the outcome of the elections will be crucial in determining the state’s future.
